Southern Spice


Do you want a place where they serve authentic, traditional and tasty South Indian dishes from all four states?

Do you want to visit a restaurant which is among the top 100 in the world?

Is best service, hospitality along with good food your priority?

If your answer is yes for the above three then head straight to Southern Spice at 
Taj Coromandel, Nungambakkam.


We were invited as part of CFG’s blogger meet. In my life i never thought that i would
be tired of eating :)
yes we were served the Maharaja Thali which comes with 35 dishes.


As soon as we entered we were given the refreshing ginger drink it was yummy






Then came the starters:


Banana dosa (Jaggery and cardamom flavoured sweet banana pancakes)

Melagu adai (Pan fried lentil pan cakes)

Injipuli koshambri (A salad of tempered lentils and lettuce with ginger-tamarind yogurt quenelles)

Denji rawa fry (Semolina crusted soft shell crabs, fried crisp)

Kori Kempu (Shredded chicken marinated with chillies and spices fried and tossed in yogurt)

Vaigai Kari sukka (Succulent lamb morsels gently cooked in fragrant spices, a typical comfort food of Madurai)

Kair katti Yerachi kola urundai (Fennel flavored crisp lamb meat dumplings wrapped with banana fiber  a specialty from Thanjavur)













A special mention for Mysore rasam (A tomato and lentil soup with a hint of coconut and jaggery) we all drank 2 cups of it, amazing taste. On the right is a cocktail made with curry leaf, mint & vodka, what a punch ;)




Then came the Main Course and the Curries:
Manathakkali vathal kozhambu (Black nightshade berries in a pungent tamarind curry)

Arachivitta Sambhar (A traditional Tamil brahmin sambhar with lentils, stone ground spices, drumsticks and Madras onions)

Pookose urlai kurma (Cauliflower florets and potato in a herbed light coconut and cashew nut curry)

Kadala gassi (Stewed black chickpeas in toasted coconut and byadgi chilli curry)

Pachakari ishtew (Seasonal fresh vegetables and potatoes with onion and green chillis, simmered in coconut milk)

Royallu iguru (Prawns slowly simmered in a rich coconut, cashew and Andhra spice mix)

Kozhi malliperalan (Kuttanad specialty – a cilantro flavoured chicken stew)

Asparagus paruppu usili (Asparagus and steamed lentils with Madras chillies)

Zucchini Khaara Poriyal


Parota (A flaky South Indian griddle cooked bread)

Idiyappam (Steamed rice string hoppers)

Appam (Rice hoppers)


Bhejwada kodi biriyani (Spiced chicken pilaf with fresh cilantro and mint – A specialty from Andhra Pradesh)

Rice with Paruppu Podi & Sambar

Thayir saadam (Curd rice served with traditional accompaniments, a must have with all South Indian meals)










The desserts served were
Elaneer payasam (Chilled tender coconut pudding) This is a must try, amazing taste, i am not a great fan of payasam but i loved this dish

Godhi bella ice-cream (Broken wheat, jaggery and banana ice-cream)

Chocolate purnam mousse (Chocolate mousse filled with coconut, lentil and jaggery mix)







The Maharaja Thali is priced at Rs.5000 + taxes, they also have other Thali starting from Rs.2000.
